Coach happy with Jets on and off field

17 Mar, 2010 08:18 AM
WESTERN Jets coach Steve Kretiuk is encouraged by the signs his team is showing in the lead-up to the TAC Cup season.

After a disappointing season last year, when they finished 11th, the Jets have come out firing, with dramatic improvements across the board.

"I would say most players have overall, compared to last year," Kretiuk said.

"We are a lot more organised when it comes to fitness, and they are doing a fantastic job.

"We aren't looking too far ahead, instead will go week by week."

For Kretiuk the changes are not just not on the field but in players' attitude as well.

"I think we are working more as a team instead of as individuals like last year. They have a changed attitude and willingness to improve."

Having lost a number of senior players from last year, including Jack Fitzpatrick and Majak Daw who are on AFL lists,

the club has a number of younger players who are pushing for selection.

"About a third of our list is top-age and the rest is bottom-age, which is really good for us," Kretiuk said.

"Those bottom-age players along with some players we have introduced from local football are starting to make real progress.

"They are in the selection mix, with some taking the spots of the top-age players."

Despite the improvement of the players, Kretiuk says there haven't been any standouts during the preseason.

"Having no standouts is a really pleasing thing.

"Players who were in and out of the side last year have stepped up and are making a real effort to secure their spot."

The club still has a couple of weeks before its first match against the Eastern Ranges, but has had one preseason win. "We were able to keep the Calder Cannons to only five goals in our practice match, which was a good result."
