Scrays rule pool all year-round

14 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
FOOTSCRAY rules the pool in the Water Polo Victoria women's state league1.

The Scray have scored a 2011 double with premierships in the winter and summer competition. But they had to overcome a nervous finish to beat Melbourne Collegians 11-10 in the summer decider at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

Key to the Scrays' victory was their multiple routes to the goal.

Melissa Hammond was outstanding with a hat-trick, while Elisa Rossato, Lauren Baldwin, Madison Morrison and Genevieve Venosta all scored doubles.

The Scray underlined its status as Victoria's No.1 women's section by claiming the state league 2 title with an 8-7 triumph over NYP Dragons.

Meanwhile, Footscray was knocked out of the men's state league 1 finals in disappointing straight-sets fashion.

Despite three goals to Ben Smith and a pair to James Ogilvie-Lee, the Scray were downed 11-7 by Richmond Tigers in the preliminary final at MSAC on Thursday night.

The Tigers went on to beat MC Titans in Saturday's grand final.
