VRL: Altona Roosters overcome odds

21 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
ALTONA Roosters got the pick-me-up they needed a month out from the Victorian Rugby League first grade finals.

Doubts raised over the title contending credentials of the Roosters in a frustratingly up and down campaign were cast aside in emphatic style on 'super Sunday'.

The Roosters knew they had to beat full-strength premiers Sunbury United Tigers to be considered even a remote chance of challenging for the premiership.

They signalled their intentions in convincing fashion with a come-from-behind 34-24 win in atrocious conditions at Loft Reserve in Newport.

"It was an ugly game on a wet and muddy ground," Roosters coach James Wanakore said.

"A real grinding, physical football game. There was a bit of heart shown out there from the boys."

A triple-treat of tries to Nono Ngaa was the cornerstone of the Roosters' victory.

The winger was like a wrecking bull whenever he collected a pass in sight of the try-line.

He seemed to be in the right place at the right time more often than not.

"He's a big boy," Wanakore said. "He's tall and he's a ball of muscle.

The Roosters were on the end of a "gee up" as they stared at a 20-22 half-time deficit.

Wanakore urged his team to "stick to the basics" and be more disciplined with the football in hand.

"I told them all the fundamentals to push hard on the line, work hard for one another and the basic stuff like that," he said.

"That was the only way Sunbury were scoring in the first half - through our mistakes."

The Roosters, led by second row tackling machine Bradley Potae, muscled up in defence.

First-time full-back Joey Kamana lifted the team with his efforts and capped a wonderful display with a try.

"He caught everything, ran the ball when he had to and tackled when he had to," Wanakore said.

"He was pretty inspirational."

The Roosters ran away with the match in a second-half blitz.

Their other try-scorers were Brandon Chase, Shane Kuru and George Manoufetoa.

It was a significant win for the Roosters as it showed their team of part-timers could match it with the star-studded Tigers.

"A lot of the Sunbury boys are in the Melbourne Storm under-20s," Wanakore said.

"It makes them a dominant team because most of their boys are training six days a week. Our boys are park footballers; we train two days a week so it's good to beat those guys.

"I think we can give it a real good crack and you could see it [the belief] on the boys' faces after the game," he said.
