Win could be turning point

WESTERN Lightning coach Joy Grubb is hoping for more patient netball from her team in the coming weeks to bounce back from stuttering start to Netball Victoria's Championship Division.

Last year's preliminary finalists have produced inconsistent results in the opening month of competition, but Grubb believes the upset seven-goal win over Monash University Central could be the turning point.

"If you were a betting person you would have had us at about 60-1 for that match," Grubb said.

"Monash are last season's premiers and definitely the yardstick of the competition, but for us everything just clicked on the night and we played patient and disciplined netball."

The outstanding result has put the Lightning season back on track after two defeats in the opening two rounds followed by a fortunate one-goal win over Peninsula Waves.

"The win was a real boost for the girls, as we've had a few injuries and have been missing some important players at the start off the season," Grubb said.

The Lightning defence has also had to deal with a change in personnel over the off-season, welcoming Kerry Barr from the Queensland State League into the pivotal wing defence position.

"Kerry has added some real bite to our defence," Grubb said.

"It's definitely a strong part of our game, and along with our goal attack Meredith Ball, we have talent at both ends of the court.

"We are just now keeping everything crossed and hoping for a bit more consistency in the second half of the season to reach the top four and play finals."
