THREE Williamstown High students are among seven players of the successful Victorian under-17 netball team to be named in the Australian squad.
Maggie Lind, Vanessa Augustini and Olivia Mitchell, who all play for the Hume City Falcons, were selected after their performances at the recent national titles in Sydney.
Selection in the side was a bonus for the girls whose team won the national title.
"The girls went through undefeated," Victorian high performance manager Nicole Richardson said.
"They played Western Australia in the first final before beating New South Wales by one point in a close final."
Lind, 15, was captain and Augustini, 16, vice-captain of the winning side.
"We had two players from last year's side, including Olivia, in the team but we decided to go with Maggie and Vanessa," Richardson said.
"Both girls are bottom-age, which makes the achievement of being captain and vice-captain even more of an honour - it's a rare feat."
It is the first time any of the three have been named in the Australian under-17 squad.
"Both Maggie and Vanessa have been part of the Australian schools sides that have competed before but haven't been eligible for this squad," Richardson said.
"For Olivia it's her second year at the under-17 level but her first Australian squad."
While the under-17 squad doesn't play matches against other international teams, the girls will be working hard on the training court.
"They go up to the Australian Institute of Sport in July for a training camp, with the under-19 squad," Richardson said. "From there they'll return to the Netball Victoria training centre where they will train once a month with elite coaches who will also focus on the girls' strength and conditioning."
