ALTONA Meadows resident Randy Pereira couldn't be any prouder after coaching Melton Centrals to the premiership in the Riddell District Football League's Western Water A-grade netball competition.
His daughter, Rebecca, played a starring role as goal attack as the side celebrated a perfect season by winning every game.
But Centrals only just managed to sneak home in the grand final.
The undefeated premiers are breathing a huge sigh of relief after fighting back from the brink to defeat arch-rival Macedon 43-40 in a see-sawing, thrill-a-minute battle at Lancefield Park on Sunday.
The hot favourites were under tremendous pressure after falling nine goals behind at the 10-minute mark of the third quarter.
But they held their nerve to fight back superbly to clinch a stirring three-goal win.
Goal attack Rebecca Pereira and goal shooter Mardi Button displayed nerves of steel to shot 32 and 11 goals respectively.
Pereira finished with 765 goals for the season. Button chimed in with 433 goals. Not surprisingly, the coach was full of praise for his players. "To win like that, it was sensational," he said.
"They showed great character. They were down and out. Macedon had us on the spot. It was looking pretty dire.
"They gave me a few more grey hairs. The whole team has been sensational all season."
Co-captains in centre Jess May and goal defence Nicole Reid are the heart and soul of the side.
Centrals' flag-winning squad is: Jess May and Nicole Reid (co-captains), Mel Laird, Tran Truong, Rebecca Pereira, Mardi Button, Kelly Briggs, Megan Gaw, Mel Allen and Kirsten Briggs.
Incredibly, Pereira admitted his players didn't train throughout the season. "Our team actually doesn't get the chance to train, so to go all the way [and win the premiership] without losing a game has been an amazing performance," he said.
"I couldn't be prouder of my girls."
Interestingly, Pereira and the majority of his squad were affiliated with Ballarat Football League club Melton last year.
"We lost the grand final and a lot of the girls decided to retire," Pereira said.
"Melton Centrals approached me and I said to the girls 'I'll go if you go' and it took off from there."
It's a double celebration for goal attack Rebecca Pereira, wing attack Tran Truong and goal keeper Mel Laird, who are celebrating their selection in the RDFL's Western Water A-grade netball competition's All-Star line-up.
What an unforgettable season it's been for goal-shooting machine Pereira.
She also displayed her class for Victoria University-Western Lightning in Netball Victoria's division one, winning the comp's hot shot award.
