Lightning aims for finals berth

27 May, 2009 11:20 AM
WESTERN Lightning coach Joy Grubb has emphasised the need for her team to maintain concentration for every game, no matter how minor, to consolidate a top-four position in the Netball Victoria's championship division.

The Lightning has enjoyed a solid start to the season despite a high turnover of players, but Grubb is wary of teams at the lower end of the table in what has shaped as an even competition.

"It's often the games against teams that are down the bottom of the table that are the hardest ones of the lot," she said.

"Even if your team doesn't mean to relax, sometimes it just happens against teams that are struggling and you can get beaten pretty quickly."

Grubb introduced a rotation policy in the early stages of the 2009 campaign to keep the team as flexible as possible and the decision looks to be paying off.

"Almost every player in our squad has already qualified for the finals after playing a minimum of 24 quarters, which is pretty good for this part of the year, so everyone has been getting a go," she said.

"And we are also very lucky to have girls like Olivia Cameron and Kelsey Brown who can cover most positions. New girls Kerri Barr and Sarah Barnes have also fitted in well."
