IT was an emotional day for Altona Seagulls who bid farewell to veteran striker Greg Drake after 250 games in the Hockey Victoria men's state league 1.
It was never going to be an easy task winning for the favourite son in his last game as they came up against Olympian Travis Brooks and his title-contending Waverley.
And Altona was without injured defenders Steve Campbell and Matt McCann. They were telling losses as Waverley carved up the Seagulls defence in a 6-3 win at Ashwood Reserve in Ashwood on Saturday.
"The guys played their hearts out for Greg Drake," Seagulls coach Darren Duff said. "He has been such a champion for our club for years, but it just wasn't to be."
The Seagulls, third-last on the ladder, are running out of lifelines with which to qualify for the finals.
They face a critical home clash with relegation-threatened Albury-Wodonga at Grant Reserve on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Seagulls are flying high on top of the women's state league 2 after their seventh straight win to start the season. The Glenn Lloyd-coached locals were victorious 4-2 on the road at Kew with captain Stephanie Sarantis scoring twice and Emma Aitken and Tegan Purser also netting.
The Seagulls will meet the other undefeated team, Albury-Wodonga, at Grant Reserve on Saturday.
