A MASTER class from Argentine international Javier Telechea has inspired Footscray Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory over western suburbs rivals Werribee Tigers in Hockey Victoria men's state league 2 at President's Park in Werribee on Saturday.
Telechea scored twice from penalty corners, underlining his reputation as the set piece specialist of the competition.
"He's got a great drag flick on him," Bulldogs team manager Neil Coster said. "We use it in a few variations and it baffles the opposition.
"It's a matter of keeping them guessing. You've got to be able to change it up so it doesn't become predicable."
Tigers coach Toni Wright admitted his side had no answer to the talents of Telechea. The South American's influence ensured the Bulldogs would erase memories of their 2-1 defeat to the Tigers earlier in the season.
"The whole game was fairly even possession wise," Wright said. "The guy who takes their drag-flicks ... there's not too many in the comp that's going to stop them."
The Bulldogs are sitting comfortably inside the top four.
They opened up a game-and-a-half break on the fifth-placed Kew and are firing on all cylinders.
"It's all very positive now," Coster said. "The team is playing well, there's no injuries to speak of and the younger blokes are stepping up. Our side is starting to get it together."
Bulldogs goalkeeper Peter Cleave made a number of telling saves in the first half to retain parity with a 1-1 scoreline at half-time.
Second-half goals to Telechea and English import Robiie Smith put the game out of reach of the home side. While the imports have stolen the spotlight, Coster is equally impressed with young up-and-comers Ryan Hopkins and the Shaw brothers, Scott and Haydn. "They're all stepping up to the mark," he said.
The Bulldogs will host Mentone in a blockbuster at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday at 2pm.
