AFTER travelling throughout the entire season undefeated, Altona Seagulls were hot favourites to win their Hockey Victoria women's state league 2 second semi-final over Albury-Wodonga at the State Hockey Centre on Sunday.
Unfortunately, the Seagulls had one of their worst games for the year, and Albury capitalised to go directly through to the September 19 grand final.
Early on, the match was characterised by errors, but Albury were impressive on the counter-attack.
Two Seagulls errors in defence resulted in Albury goals.
Veteran Seagulls striker Samantha Winch
won a penalty stroke, which young midfielder Bronte Kerley put in to make the gap 2-1.
But another defensive error by the Seagulls was punished and Albury scored from it to put the result beyond doubt.
The Seagulls take on Monash University in the preliminary final at the SHC on Sunday at 10.30am.
SCOREBOARD: Altona 2 lt Albury-Wodonga 3.
