ALTONA'S Luke Doerner was a star in Australia's first World Cup hockey title victory in 24 years, scoring the winning goal in the final against Germany in New Delhi this month.
In a rematch of the last two World Cup finals, Australia was able to turn the tables and win the match between the top-two-ranked teams, 2-1.
"It was awesome to win the event, a really good achievement to follow up from the Champions Trophy last year," Doerner said last week.
While they were able to win the tournament, it was a rough start for the Kookaburras, surprisingly losing to England in an earlier match.
"England played really well and we didn't," Doerner said.
"We had 27-7 scoring shots but couldn't make the most of them."
The Kookaburras, however, rebounded, recording the biggest-winning margin in World Cup history, 12-0, against South Africa, with Doerner scoring five goals.
The Burras were undefeated for the rest of the tournament.
For Doerner, who was part of the silver medal-winning side in 2006, his winning goal against Germany capped off a great tournament.
"I did OK ... I was equal top scorer for the competition with eight goals," the defender said.
There will, however, be little time to celebrate.
Doerner will soon be on a plane to Holland after spending a few days in Altona. "It's the middle of the hockey season in Holland, so I will be there until June. Then we will be focusing on the Commonwealth Games, where we can hopefully go back-to-back."
