ALTONA Hockey Club aims to improve on its last year's performance as the Victorian State League 1 competition gets under way.
After finishing seventh last year, the side has had a slow start in the off-season, with a number of players recovering from injuries. "Everything has been a bit slower than we would have liked," coach Darren Duff said.
"We're yet to get our full side on the park, but it seems that we'll have everyone in round one."
Despite the disruptions, Duff is happy with the team's progress.
"We are travelling nicely despite not having everyone.
"The boys are very fit and have been running a lot heading into the season.
"All we have to do now is make sure the game plan is up to scratch."
Although it has managed to retain most of its players in the off-season, Altona faces a battle to replace two of its stars.
"Our Canadian international has returned home and Mark Richardson, who has more than 15 years' experience, has retired," Duff said.
"These spots will be hard to fill. We have managed to get a couple of guys from Bendigo and Albury and hopefully they'll play senior hockey."
The side has played a number of practice matches in recent weeks in preparation for round one this weekend.
"We haven't been worrying about the scoreboard in the practice games; it's more about how we play," Duff said.
"I've been happy with how they have played and it's all about getting the structure right at the moment."
Duff says finals are the aim this year.
"We are still working with a young side and trying to get our game plans up to scratch, but definitely looking to finish higher than last season."
Altona's first match is against MCC on April 17 at the MHS-MCC hockey venue in South Yarra. Tara Murray
