ALTONA Magic should have a spring in its step when it hosts Sunshine George Cross on super Saturday under lights at Paisley Park Soccer Complex.
The Magic enter the season-defining game refreshed after a week of rest and relaxation due to the postponement of its round 12 clash with South Melbourne to June 4.
With his side rock-bottom of the ladder with 11 matches remaining in the season, Magic coach Sash Becvinovski used the week's break to headhunt new recruits to add depth to the squad.
The Magic made three significant signings. They went way out west to bring striker John Thornely in from Western Australian Premier League club ECU Joondalup.
"He's a big, strong lad," Magic captain Pece Siveski said. "Hopefully, he adds some bite to the team."
Closer to home, George Papadopoulos arrived from George Cross and will not have to wait long to face his former teammates with a debut likely on Saturday.
Another exciting signature was that of attacking midfielder Goran Talevski, who returns to the Magic after a stint with Hume City. The Magic's season is at the crossroads.
It might be uncomfortably placed on the bottom of the table, but it has been competitive in all bar one game and it trails fifth-placed George Cross by just eight points.
Siveski says his teammates understand the importance of breaking through for their first win on home soil.
"In the next two or three weeks we will work out whether we are fighting relegation or making a run to the finals."
Siveski has warned that George Cross should not be taken lightly.
"It will be a physical game," he said.
"There's no easy games against them.
"It's on our home turf and we're desperate to get our first win of the season at home." Lance Jenkinson
