THE unthinkable is real. The kings of the Victorian Premier League are dead.
Two-time reigning champions Altona Magic is on its way to the state league after a horror season ended in relegation tears.
The Magic players, coaches and officials were in a state of shock as their miraculous 4-2 road win over Oakleigh Cannons on Sunday at Jack Edwards did not suffice.
There was no man more devastated on Sunday night than Magic coach Sash Becvinovski when he realised his beloved club would be mixing it in the state league 1 in 2011.
"I've spent 10 years there as a player," he said.
"I've won championships there and celebrated some good wins.
"I've also had some bad losses along the way, but this is probably the worst one out of them all."
The Magic lived up to their end of the bargain.
They claimed an astonishing win to give themselves a chance and extinguish the Cannons' finals flame in the process.
John Thornley, Mathew Theodore, Sime Kovacevic and Pece Siveski scored the goals in the hollow win.
The news of Sunshine George Cross' 4-0 loss to South Melbourne was met with cheers from the Magic fans.
The wooden spoon was officially heading to the Georgies.
The one result that mattered was the one that did not go the Magic's way.
Bentleigh Greens somehow managed to draw with high-flying Richmond Eagles at the Kingston Heath Soccer Complex in a game which resulted in two second-half goals.
The Magic needed the Greens to lose - but their worst nightmares were realised.
"It's not based on one game - it's based on the whole season," said Becvinovski, who was thrown into the deep end mid-season as a replacement for sacked coach Dragan Blazevski.
The Magic was struggling with seven points in nine games and could not find the back of the net.
The task for Becvinovski was to get the team scoring goals - and it certainly did that. "We scored 40 goals in the year and got relegated. That's 20 more goals than the other sides at the bottom. Where's the justice?"
The Magic's defensive record was damning.
Their defence was the leakiest in the league for 46 conceded in 22 rounds.
"We conceded some very sloppy goals in the time I was there and didn't have stability at the back end."
It was a year of instability for the Magic. The title-winning team was dismantled in the off-season, and there was an overhaul of the board.
"The players are shattered and the committee as well. We've got to fight and come back up again."
