"WE had more holes than Swiss cheese." Those were the words of Altona Magic captain Pece Siveski describing the defensive wall built by his side in a shocking 4-1 loss to Green Gully Cavaliers in the Victorian Premier League at Paisley Park Reserve on Saturday night.
The giant strides the Magic have made under new coach Sash Becvinovski are being undermined by a horrendous defensive record that is growing worse by the week.
Magic has conceded 11 goals in its past two games, 30 in the opening 15 rounds, and tumbled back into the relegation zone.
Spare a thought for Magic goalkeeper Andrew Sfetkopoulos who must be starting to get a sore back having to pick all the balls up from the back of the net.
"He's not having the best of times, but you can't blame him," Siveski said.
"We're letting teams through our defence when we shouldn't. I don't know whether it's confidence thing or fitness."
Magic started off on the wrong foot with the concession of goals to Cavaliers strikers Josh Groenewald and Jason Hayne inside 33 minutes.
The game took a sudden shift in momentum.
Magic's hard working striker John Thornley halved the deficit in the 41st minute.
"We thought that we would've had the momentum going into the second half," Siveski said.
"We tended to rush things and played too many long balls which played right into their hands."
Graham Hockless diminished whatever slim hopes Magic had of getting into the game by scoring in the 71st minutes.
Then disaster struck for the home side when defender Sime Kovacevic was banished to the sidelines by the referee for a second yellow card.
"We were a bit flat after last week's 7-5 defeat. To cop another four goals and more errors was hard to take. We've got to keep fighting, we've got to find something in the next couple of weeks."
The last-placed Magic faces South Melbourne in a catch-up game at the John Cain Memorial Reserve in Thornbury on Sunday at 3pm.
