SPOTSWOOD has taken care of the itches it had to scratch in the Western Region Football League division 1 over the past two rounds.
The ultra-professional Woodsmen obliterated lowly Glenorden Hawks by 203 points on the road at Heatherdale Reserve on Saturday to follow on from their 154-point whitewash of Sunshine Heights a week earlier.
The Hawks are nothing more than a blip on the radar of the all-conquering Woodsmen this season.
Woodsmen player-coach Ben Kelly admitted it was hard to stay motivated for games against low-ranked sides when there is no chance of being dislodged on the ladder.
"For our guys the last two weeks games have been pretty ordinary," he said.
The Woodsmen better snap out of auto-pilot because a serious contender is on its way to McLean Reserve on Saturday.
The most-anticipated Hobsons Bay derby in years will roll into town when the second-placed Altona Vikings head to The Avenue for a genuine blockbuster.
"We've been thinking about it for three weeks now," Kelly said.
"We're pretty excited to be playing Altona. The players dying for it. It's good healthy competition for Hobsons Bay to have two quality football sides running around in the competition."
The Woodsmen have struck psychological blows on Albion, St Albans and Sunshine Kangaroos in the second half of the campaign.
They get a chance to intimidate the youth-driven Vikings in the penultimate round before a trip to Hoppers Crossing in round 18.
The last two rounds will harden up the Woodsmen after two soft wins against teams out of finals contention. "Everyone is pretty pumped up for this one," Kelly said.
"It's our last home game and we want to put on a good show for our supporters."
The victory over Glenorden will always hold a special place in the memory of Woodsmen full-forward Mark Keenan.
The man nicknamed 'Crackers' brought up his 100th goal for the season. It was the third time in four seasons the spearhead has achieved the feat. "It's a huge achievement," Kelly said.
