WRFL: Spotswood punishes Sunshine Heights

SPOTSWOOD'S desire to make it four consecutive flags in the Western Region Football League division 1 could not be any stronger.

The Woodsmen hold the top spot on the ladder after six rounds with their only blip coming in a narrow loss to title-threat Sunshine Kangaroos.

Sounding a warning to the challengers, Woodsmen's senior coach Ben Kelly says past glories mean nothing to those who pull on the famous green jumper with the gold V this season.

The current list of players is eager to create its own slice of history.

"It's never the same team," Kelly said.

"We've got a lot of different players to last year so it's new goals for everyone.

"Some young guys who have been around the club for a bit are really pushing the rest of the senior guys who have had a bit of success.

"It's a good environment to have because you've got blokes not being able to relax and if they relax they will lose their spot in the side."

That hunger was evident when the Woodsmen dismantled undermanned Sunshine Heights on Saturday at McLean Reserve.

There was a possibility the axe could swing if there was a repeat of the undisciplined performance which saw them lose to the Kangaroos by two goals a week earlier.

Order was restored as the Woodsmen showed no mercy to thrash the Dragons by a massive 129 points.

"We played fairly poorly the week before so it was good to get our decision-making back and correct the skill errors we made," Kelly said.

"Our boys had the fire in the belly.

"From the outset we were right on the money."

The Woodsmen opened up with a five-goal-to-one first term and stretched the lead to 68 by half-time.

Thereafter, it was a matter of how much the Woodsmen would bolster their percentage at the top of the ladder.

The Dragons could not curtail the influence of Woodsmen winger Elliott Wood and onballer Chris O'Keefe.

The man who cashed in on the silver service from the midfield was full-forward Mark Keenan, who booted eight goals to take his tally to a competition-best 37 from six games.

The Woodsmen are the heaviest-scoring team in the competition.

It is scary to think they are piling on the goals without former top-10 AFL draftee Luke Molan.

Groin surgery had sidelined the star forward until he played a bit over a quarter with the Woodsmen reserves on Saturday.

"He had a groin operation in pre-season so we're taking it slowly with him," Kelly said.

"One more week in the twos and he'll come back in, I would think."

The Woodsmen host the Glenorden Hawks at McLean Reserve on Saturday.

In other matches, Altona Vikings were made to pay for a slipshod opening quarter with a 40-point loss to Sunshine Kangaroos in the match of the round at Grant Reserve.

The Vikings were 36 points down at quarter-time and never recovered with the efforts of Tyler Healy, Lee Spiteri and Dean Pace proving fruitless.

The Kangaroos are one of three teams with a 5-1 win-loss record along with the Woodsmen and the Hoppers Crossing Warriors.

The Warriors joined the select group with a Wyndham derby win over Glenorden by 63 points at Heatherdale Oval.

West Footscray was competitive until quarter-time in its clash with Port Melbourne Colts at JL Murphy Reserve.

The Colts piled on 12 goals to one in the second quarter to assume total control before going on to win by a whopping 149 points. David McGregor was a stand-out for the Colts with 11 goals.

The closest match of the round saw StAlbans edge out Albion by four points at Kings Park Reserve.
