Seagulls retain their top spot

27 May, 2009 11:21 AM
WILLIAMSTOWN'S blistering start to the season continues in the Victorian Football League. The undefeated ladder leader methodically dismantled fellow premiership aspirant Port Melbourne in the match of the round at Burbank Oval on Saturday.

The Seagulls made it six wins in a row by sending their traditional rival packing to the tune of 42 points in front of a bumper crowd of 3000.

They blew the game to bits after adding 6.3 to 2.6 in the second quarter. Both sides had been troubled by inaccuracy in front of goals in the first quarter.

Coach Brad Gotch would've been thrilled with the remarkably even performance from his players.

Club general manager Brendan Curry said 'Gotchy' had a difficult task selecting his six best players. "It could've been 12 or 13. It was pretty even right across the board. We were very pleased with the effort."

Gotch settled on Stephen Tiller, Jason Cloke, Sam Reid, Ben Davies, Guy O'Keefe and Wayde Skipper as his best six with the likes of Chris Egan and Cameron Lockwood desperately unlucky to miss out.

Curry gave Western Bulldogs-listed youngster O'Keefe a pat on the back for his efforts in the midfield and is confident an AFL debut isn't far away for the ball magnet.

"He's knocking on the door," he said.

Williamstown was determined to do well to gain a bit of revenge on their traditional rival for knocking them out in the preliminary final last year.

No wonder long-serving president Trevor Monti couldn't contain his delight as the final siren sounded.

The passionate Monti was delighted to see a who's who of club greats like Barry Round, Ian 'Chops' Rickman, Tony Pastore, Billy Swan, Terry Wheeler, Tony 'Spud' Dullard, Larry Simmons, Ricky Slevsion and Chris Sandells enjoying a few cold ales together at his pre-match lunch.

The Seagulls host reigning premier North Ballarat in a blockbuster at Burbank Oval this Sunday.

Police Commissioner Simon Overland, who was a more than a handy footballer in Canberra in the 1990s, is sure to be a fascinating guest speaker at the club's pre-match lunch. Inquiries: 93900611.
