THE taste of premiership glory has galvanised community support for Williamstown CYMS, says club president and former Footscray Bulldogs player Peter Welsh.
The Victorian Amatuer Football Association club has worked hard to forge close ties with a community crying out for a strong footballing presence and the results are beginning to show.
"Our supporters have provided a big boost for us since we won the flag," Welsh said. "We are really the only club in the Williamstown area (other than the VFL side), so if kids aren't going on to play senior footy, we really aren't doing our job."
Welsh has been at the forefront in initiating a stronger connection with the Williamstown Junior Football Club.
"We want it to become a natural progression from junior into senior football. So if we build that bridge with them, we lay the foundation stones for future development of our club."
This influx of youth into the CY's senior teams has also helped provide the club with the resources to kickstart a third senior team, an initiative that looks like having a positive influence on a senior side busy dealing with the rigours of D2 division.
The firsts have performed admirably in the opening weeks of the season, despite dealing with an unhealthy dose of injuries which, if not properly managed, can often trigger a dreaded premiership hangover.
"We've had a few retirements as well as a few injuries," coach Allen Elliott said.
"In our match at Eltham, we fielded just 11 premiership players, but we are still travelling quite well so I see a big upside for us for the rest of the season."
The dearth of experienced players has provided a stern test of the club's new-found depth and it seems as though the youngsters are answering the call.
"Zach Read has played every game for us this season, and he's been terrific as a small forward who can take a good contested mark," Elliott said.
"Ben McColl has also been great the couple of times he's filled in as a defender."
Williamstown CYMS will be glad to welcome back a few heavy-hitters in the coming weeks, with last year's competition best and fairest runners-up James Wong set for a return, alongside premiership player Tim Wheeler.
