VTCA: Woodsmen keep Snowdogs on tight lead

14 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
SPOTSWOOD will be satisfied with its work on day one against St Bernard's Old Collegians in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association's senior division.

The Woodsmen put the clamps on the Snowdogs at Donald McLean Reserve on Saturday to restrict the visitors to 8-198 in 80 overs - a total they are more than capable of reaching when play resumes on the second day.

Opening speedster Andrew Dickinson (3-45) and lock-down bowler Matt Leddin (2-39) picked up wickets at crucial times whenever the Snowdogs appeared to be getting off the leash. So the Woodsmen had the upper hand at stumps.

Williamstown CYMS, winless at the bottom of the table, are behind the eight ball against Bentleigh after losing on first innings at Bentleigh Reserve. CYs were bowled out for 83 in 33.4 overs and were on the receiving end of a hat-trick to Demons part-time bowler Chris Street.

The Demons passed the score six down and powered to 7-111 before declaring. They've set their sights on an outright result this weekend.

Yarraville Club has a tough task against Greenvale at Greenvale Recreation Reserve.

The Clubbers will require 222 for victory after the Vales recovered from a slow start to post a competitive 9-221 off 80 overs.

Emmett Bronca, Matthew Murphy, Matt Boglis and Michael O'Keefe captured two wickets apiece for the title-defending Clubbers.

Plenty is at stake for western suburbs outfits Altona North and Footscray United in the north division clash at Crofts Reserve with the losing side to head into Christmas in the relegation zone. United assumed control by posting an imposing 7-273 off 80 overs after heroics from captain Tarique Jeffrey (124 not out) and wicketkeeper Steven McKay (59).

North's most productive player was its leader Matt Saunders with three wickets and a run out.

Laverton is odds-on to head into the festive break with an unbeaten record after setting itself up nicely on day one against Jacana in the north A1 at Jacana Reserve. The Magpies rolled Jacana for just 136 in 45.5 overs after a five-wicket haul to Matthew O'Brien.

The tourists were 3-65 in reply with Charlie Swallow, a batsman with 124, 110 and 99 in his last three digs, surviving to stumps on 37 not out.

In west B1, St Andrews had local rivals Barkly Street United chasing leather at Maribyrnong Reserve en route to 275 off 79.3 overs. Mathew Pipczak (96), Chris Armstrong (56) and Lee Krygger (42no) were standouts for the Saints.

Seddon has its sights set on an outright win after securing first innings points over Sunshine YCW at Kinder Smith Reserve.
