SEDDON has survived a scare to edge out Kingsville Baptists by 14 runs in a Victorian Turf Cricket Association west B1 local derby at Angliss Reserve on Saturday.
The nail-biting victory sees the Hawks soar into second place and sets up a blockbuster with premiership favourites Altona Roosters in a two-day game at Hanmer Reserve starting Saturday.
Hawks secretary Rolf Tamburro said his side was in the right frame of mind ahead of their biggest test of the summer to date.
"You get a lot of confidence out of winning the close ones," he said.
"They're the best ones to win."
Seddon reached 202 on day one courtesy of the 'Tim and Tom Show'.
Seasoned campaigners Tim Grant (73) and Tom Kriebardis (43) were outstanding where most others floundered.
Kriebardis's contributions didn't end there. The left-arm spinner had a massive impact with the ball, taking 4-62 off 32 overs in a man-of-the-match performance.
Sri Lankan import Tharindu Weerasinghe chimed in with 4-48 off 23 overs and Thomas Matkovic was tight with 1-15 off nine.
The Baptists' best hope of chasing down the score was while run machine and skipper Senad Levic (87 not out) was at the crease with Rahmatullah Khwaja (28). The pair put on 50 for the sixth wicket before Khwaja was run out with a direct hit from Hawks boundary rider James Oldham.
"It was a good aim and a bit of a fluke at the same time," Tamburro said.
"Once that partnership was broken the wickets started falling."
The loss is a setback for Kingsville, but they remain in fourth spot with destiny in their own hands.
