THE writing is on the wall for Williamstown in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association.
The Seagulls suffered a disastrous collapse to be all out for 87 in their chase of Coburg's tiny total of 106 at Coburg City Oval on Saturday.
Twelve months ago, the Seagulls were on their way to the grand final where they were ultimately defeated by western rivals Melton, but this time even the final six is a stretch.
"It's been a long season," Seagulls captain Craig Sheedy told the Weekly. "It's going to be difficult to make the finals now, but you never give up."
The Seagulls will be left to rue their inability to reach the small target set on Saturday.
They fell short by 19 runs after scoring at a snail's pace 1.26 runs per over.
Sheedy says the conditions were not conducive to run-making.
"It was an ordinary wicket and a really long grass in the outfield," he said. "I think they keep it long for the footy."
After a shaky start, the Seagulls appeared to be cruising to victory with experienced heads Brenton Hodges (21) and Graham Murdoch (25) at the crease.
They moved the score on to 3-63 before Murdoch was given out leg before.
"The bowler only half appealed and he was given out," Sheedy said. "We had Coburg by the throat before then."
The Seagulls lost their next three wickets for three runs and walked down struggle street thereafter.
Sheedy spoke to his players post-game about the importance of putting a value on their wicket having produced too many sub-par totals this summer.
"That's where we've got to get better," he said.
"You can't get scores of around 100 and expect to win a game.
"We did the hard work with the ball and in the field and let it slip."
Yarraville's optimism of chasing down Ivanhoe's target of 166 at Yarraville Oval was misguided.
The Eagles, searching for their second win in succession, were routed for 84 in 49.5 overs.
The trouble for the Eagles was too much of the work was left to Leigh Holmes (35) and Tim McRae (17).
Altona's modest 125 was never going to hold up against a Balwyn side that marched confidently to 8-209 on day two at JK Grant Reserve.
The A's have slid to fourth on the table.
