SEDDON wants to revive its Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 finals bid with an outright victory over lowly Avondale Heights at Hanmer Reserve.
It's on the right track after inspirational captain-coach Tim Grant (100) underlined his value with an unbeaten century, combining with Jeremy Procko (77) as the side recorded 8-332 in 70 overs before declaring.
Grant, a former district cricketer with Melbourne University, timed his run to triple figures to perfection with a patient start followed by a whirlwind display after tea.
"He paced his innings well," first XI debutant and the club's assistant secretary Sheldon D'Souza said.
"At first he looked to get himself in, but once the score got to 300 he started taking risks and hitting a few big shots."
It is Grant's first season in charge of Seddon and he runs a fairly tight ship, instilling a higher level of professionalism with stricter attention to detail on the training track.
The 'one-percenters' are honed so they become second nature come Saturday. "He has put in a lot of structure," D'Souza said. "I think it's helped a lot of the younger guys."
Seddon has to win three remaining matches to be in the running for the finals.
An outright win over the Heights would boost their hopes.
Two early wickets to right-arm medium pacer Chris Weitzel has the visitors at a precarious 2-9 after 10 overs.
The green top should suit the bowling of Weitzel, left-arm medium pacer Kapil Mamidi and the promoted D'Souza, while spinners Grant and Tom Kriebardis could be used if Seddon gains first innings points and forces a follow-on.
Footscray United is in a commanding position for an outright win against a disappointing Albion away at Robert Bruce Reserve.
A seven-wicket haul to Bulldogs paceman Darren McLellan was behind the home side's dismissal for 93 in 33.5 overs.
The Bulldogs response was swift and calculated. Adam Preece led the charge with 118 not out as his side left no illusions of their ambition to go for maximum points when play resumes on Saturday. The Bulldogs were 4-200 at stumps with a lead of 107.
