FOOTSCRAY Edgewater coach Michael O'Sullivan said it was disappointing his side was unable to end its season on a high after the final Premier Cricket match against Geelong was called off due to poor weather.
The side went into Saturday chasing Geelong's 221 first innings total and having reached 7-127 before the relentless downpour began, O'Sullivan believed his side would have finished off its season with a win.
"It was disappointing we could not end the season on a high note and if you don't make the finals you always want win that last round match," he said.
"We did well last week to hold them to 221 and we started well on Saturday but it was just a difficult day with the weather and it got really dark when it started raining.
"I think we could have got the win as we weren't climbing Everest chasing 221 and we still had some good players to bat and it would have been a tough day to bowl."
Footscray ended the season in 15th place and O'Sullivan said he was both "disappointed and pleased" with the way his side had played over the past six months.
"On one level it was disappointing we didn't make the finals and finished towards the bottom end of the table, but on another level it was an important year in terms of development as our younger guys came a long way this season.
"Leading into the season we lost four players who had played every match in the previous season and our best bowler John Hastings didn't bowl a single over for us all season due to his state team commitments, so we had to count on players who had never had first team experience.
"But it was a new dawn for us and we only played poorly in two games and we generally played decent cricket."
O'Sullivan was pleased that a number of players from the seconds and thirds managed to step up into the first XI He said the "future looks bright" for his young side.
"Brad Robertson came out of nowhere this season to be one of the leading bowlers in the competition and has a had a great first year in the first XI," he said.
"Carl Sandri had an outstanding year and got 23 wickets as our number one spinner and also did extremely well in the field.
"Many players stepped up and performed well and for some it will be a three or four-year process but we have to be patient and I'm sure we'll improve next year."
As for his plans for next season, O'Sullivan is "absolutely happy to stay on board" with the club and hopes to be reappointed in the coming weeks.
"This project at Footscray is new, different and exciting
and I'm looking forward to
continuing my work with the club.
"Obviously the club will perform a review but hopefully I will still be around next season."
