FOOTSCRAY Edgewater and Fitzroy Doncaster were inseparable after locking horns for 194 overs in Victorian Premier Cricket at the weekend.
Two wickets or five runs either way would have settled the contest on Sunday, but time was a friend to noone as the clock became the determining factor. A draw was the final result, and a fair one at that.
The Bulldogs fancied their chances at stumps on day one after registering a score in excess of 300 for a third match in a succession.
They powered to 8-323 off 104 overs at the Merv Hughes Oval before the declaration. Another scintillating display from red-hot wicketkeeper-batsman Dylan Kight produced 146 not out off 270 balls.
Ben Green, moved down the order to No.6, enjoyed facing up to the older ball to make 75 off 166 balls and feature in a 171-run fourth wicket stand.
The Bulldogs faced stern resistance from the Lions on day two. The visitors were seemingly closing in on victory when stumps were drawn.
They reached 8-318 after strong performances from Scott Huntley (87) and Dale Tormey (84) but ran out of overs to reach the target.
In the end, a share of the points was fair for both teams, but the Bulldogs would be disappointed for the second week running not to have capitalised on a massive first innings score.
Meanwhile, in the midweek Twenty20, Footscray Edgewater overcame Geelong by four wickets in a close contest at Merv Hughes Oval.
Set 136 to win, the Bulldogs reached the target six down with eight balls to spare as Nick Oldridge entertained the crowd with 64 not out and Travis Dean chimed in with 23.
Meanwhile, Altona's meeting with Victorian Sub-District association yardstick Melton is set to go to the wire when play resumes in Melton on Saturday. The A's require a gettable 214 for victory after a good bowling performance from Aaron Maynard (3-47), Gayan Fernando (2-53) and Gordon MacFarlane (2-30).
