Premier Cricket: Bulldogs punt on recruits

05 Oct, 2011 12:00 AM
DESPITE the loss of talented top-order batsman Shaun Dean, Footscray Edgewater coach Barry Neivandt has high hopes for the club ahead of the start of this year's Victorian Premier Cricket season.

Neivandt told the Weekly he was pleased with the progress of his squad as the Bulldogs look to improve after finishing a disappointing 10th in 2010-11 and missing the finals.

However, Neivandt said the loss of the experienced Dean - who has left the club due to work commitments - would hurt.

"He's played 92 first XI matches with us, so from that side of things it's disappointing," he said.

"But it creates opportunity."

The club already boasts a high-profile coaching panel, which includes one-time WA captain Ian Brayshaw and Footscray legend and former Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes, who pulled on the baggy green in 53 Test matches.

Neivandt said a strong emphasis had been placed on skills throughout the pre-season.

The club has obtained the services of 15 players during the off-season, including quick Hamish Winter-Irving, from the Bendigo league.

Neivandt nominated exciting 17-year-old top-order batsman Jackson Knight - who has represented Victoria at under-19 level - along with James Freeman and Michael Hill as among the players to watch.

He said the club was also hoping to get a clearance for dynamic Essendon all-rounder Tallan Wright.

The Bulldogs are facing a tough opening to the regular season with their first three matches against Richmond and Geelong followed by a clash with competition powerhouse Carlton.

The club will also have to do without Victorian all-rounder John Hastings who is out for the season due to a shoulder injury, while Dean Russ and Anthony Barton return from overseas in a fortnight.

"We want to be winning finals rather than just participate in them," Neivandt said.

"I'm very confident we've got a talented group of players. Our biggest thing is belief."

Footscray Edgewater takes on Richmond in a one-dayer at Merv Hughes Oval this Saturday from 11am.
