Opener blasts century as Clubbers reach lofty target

17 Feb, 2010 08:33 AM
BARRING a miraculous turn of events, Yarraville Club has earned the right to a home semi-final in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division and should enter with the No.1 ranking.

The Clubbers underlined their quality in a mighty run chase to defeat second favourite Airport West-St Christophers by 18 runs in the match of the summer at Hansen Reserve in West Footscray on Saturday.

The title chasers followed the game plan to perfection to pass the 337-run target with six wickets in hand and two overs to spare.

"It was a hard-fought game," Clubbers president John Strachan said.

"It came down to the last 10 balls.

"We knew if we stuck to the plan we could win because our ground is a batsman's paradise."

The Clubbers' innings was built on foundations laid by opener Andrew Cullen, who made 115.

It was the finest hour of his career for the former Footscray Edgewater second XI player who made his maiden senior century.

"That was his first-ever senior 100 and he was ecstatic," Strachan said.

The Clubbers can stitch up the No.1 ranking with a win over McKinnon in the final round two-dayer starting on Saturday at McKinnon Reserve.

Altona North hit the safety switch to leap out of the relegation zone with a comfortable 127-run win over St Bernard's Old Collegians at the Murphy Oval in West Essendon.

Sitting third-last on the ladder, North have their destiny in their own hands in the final round.

They made their difficult task of defending 187 look easy as they rolled the Snowdogs for 60 on the back of five great overs from Lee Elmore, which reaped 4-8.

Spotswood star Matt Leddin made his second ton of the summer, but it was not enough to stop the in-form Old Essendon Grammarians from claiming the honours by 85 runs in the shadows of the West Gate Bridge at McLean Reserve.

In lower division matches, the poor conditions at Overland Reserve saved Seddon from a certain defeat to East Keilor in the north A1, while Kingsville Baptists lost to Aberfeldie in north B1.
