ALTONA Lady Gators have emerged as the most serious threat to the supremacy of undefeated ladder-leader Warrnambool in the Victorian Basketball League Big V women's division 1.
The white-hot Lady Gators came out of a double-header weekend unscathed after a crushing win over Hawthorn Magic and Werribee Devils, extending their winning streak to eight games.
The professional manner in which the wins were achieved and not the final margin was most pleasing for Lady Gators' coach Sharon Grieve.
"We had a focus on what we wanted to do," she said.
"Not only offensively but defensively.
"We set ourselves some goals and most were achieved."
The Lady Gators had a win to savour over a youth-driven Devils by 45 points on the road at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Sunday.
The victory was sweet as a large bulk of the Lady Gators were title winners with the Devils last season and returned to the court for the first time since their grand final win.
Those players have new challenges, new teammates and a new environment and were not going to let sentiment get in the way of a task at hand.
"Everyone stepped up today," Grieve said. "It was a good win."
It was a memorable homecoming for All-star guard Stacey Barr.
The teenager slayed her former team with a remarkable 32 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Grieve was incredibly busy with nine points, eight steals and eight assists.
Her captain Emma Coyne added an offensive string to her bow with 15 points.
The most pleasing aspect of the game was the blooding of "tiny" 15-year-old Amy Lawrence, who had 15 minutes of court time. "She's one of our development players and in the past couple of games she's really stepped up," Grieve said.
The Lady Gators have a bye this weekend. Meanwhile, the Altona Gators have relinquished their hold on the Shepherd-Watkins trophy.
The Gators lost 59-56 in a pressure-cooker game at a rocking Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday night.
They made amends on Sunday with a 69-62 win over Hawthorn Magic at the Boroondara Sports Complex.
The Gators face their toughest road trip of the year when they visit The Arena in Geelong on Saturday night for a clash with chart toppers Geelong Cats.
