ALTONA Lady Gators produced one of their more puzzling performances of the Victorian Basketball League Big V women's division 1 season to stave off a challenge from Southern Peninsula at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday.
The Lady Gators were seemingly content on a Sunday stroll for the opening three periods before unleashing their fury in the last quarter to storm to a flattering 36-point win.
Lady Gators player-coach Sharon Grieve, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, was certainly not doing backflips over her side's showing.
"It wasn't the prettiest game," she said. "We probably should have got it done a bit earlier in the game, but we finally got it together in the last quarter. The margin didn't really tell what the game was all about."
The Lady Gators were lacklustre for the opening three quarters. They were always in control of their own destiny with a comfortable buffer, but at no stage did they appear to be building to a massive win.
In the final 12 minutes, the Lady Gators outscored their opponents 29-6 as they hit 12 of 23 field goals in the last term, dominated the rebounding and got their hands dirty on the defensive end to deny the visitors a path to the basket.
"'I think the girls just went 'okay, we need to put our foot down'," Grieve said.
It was a massive week for the Lady Gators. Young gun Stacey Barr was selected in the Big V all-star team to play Japan at the Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Thursday night.
Barr, recruited from the Werribee She-Devils where she claimed most valuable player status in last year's division 1 grand final series win over the Sunbury Lady Jets, will benefit from the exposure of playing against an international team.
The youngster will go into the game with good form after hitting 23 points and dragging in 15 rebounds in the Lady Gators' win.
"Stacey is looking to go and play in America at some stage and I think the chance to play against another international team will give her some really good experience," Grieve said.
Grieve has made the all-star team in a coaching capacity.
A title-winning coach with the She-Devils last season, she will strengthen her reputation as one of the top women's coaches in the league when she takes on the role of Big V assistant coach. "I'm grateful for the chance to do that," she said.
The Lady Gators host Sunbury on Saturday at 8pm at the Altona Sports Centre.
The Gators' men's division 1 team will return refreshed after a week's rest to host Sunbury on Sunday at 1pm.
