VICTORY was a little too cruisy for the Altona Gators coach Darren Davey's liking over Keysborough in the Victorian Basketball League Big V men's division 1 on Sunday.
The top-two Gators took the home team to the cleaners in the first two quarters and held a 25-point half-time lead during their 77-61 win at the Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough.
But the Gators' second half was less than impressive with Davey losing his cool with his players at three-quarter-time.
"Our guys became complacent and took it a bit easy in that third quarter," Davey said. "I let them know about it."
The most intriguing duel of the day was between the big men in the key. Gators' towering centre James Guljas was held to 19 points and eight rebounds in his battle with Keysborough's Jadranko Jusufagic.
Guljas' numbers were slightly down due to less court time. Once the Gators had amassed a big lead, Davey made sure he got some minutes into his bench.
Daniel Williamson came to be a menacing presence under the basket with 10 rebounds and other bench starters relished the extended court time.
"It's handy to get minutes into the bench," Davey said.
The Gators have a bye this weekend. Davey will have the chance to scout his opponents ahead of a massive month. "Coaches don't get weekends off," he said with a chuckle.
Meanwhile, the Lady Gators had a remarkable weekend on the court.
The Sharon Grieve-coached outift picked up a huge 25-point win over Whittlesea Pacers on Saturday night at the Mill Park Basketball Stadium.
They followed up with a 38-point thrashing of the Craigieburn Lady Eagles on Sunday at the Craigieburn Leisure Centre.
Former Werribee She-Devils title-winning players Grieve and young gun Stacey Barr led the way for the Lady Gators in both games.
The Lady Gators, fourth on the ladder after 11 games, head into their bout with Southern Peninsula at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday as hot favourites.
