ALTONA Gators wilted under the defensive heat of the Warrnambool Seahawks to lose 49-61 in a low-scoring Victorian Basketball League Big V men's division1 tussle at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday.
It was Mother's Day misery for the Gators, recording their lowest score of the season as their offence broke down with a sub-standard 14-of-59 from the field.
The Gators' lone weapon was James Guljas, who posted double-double 17 points and 22 rebounds and got to the free throw line on 15 occasions with aggressive play.
The weekend was not a total disaster for the Gators, who returned with a 74-62 win away to Melbourne University at the Melbourne University Sports Centre on Saturday night.
Guljas was the most prolific Gator with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Adam Spence (15 points), Rohan Bishop (13 points) and Randy Shanklin (10 points and six rebounds) left their mark on the win.
The Gators women's division 1 team also had a bittersweet weekend. They travelled to Melbourne University on Saturday night for a 73-37 win before coming home on Sunday and losing 82-66 to Warrnambool.
Gators' player-coach Sharon Grieve was a dominant force in both games.
