Williamstown Wolves atone for defeat

07 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
WILLIAMSTOWN Wolves had a hint of deja vu about their performance in the latest round of Baseball Victoria's summer league division 2.

They produced more than 10 hits and a solid pitching display both this round and last. The only difference was the result.

On Sunday, the Wolves atoned with a 4-2 win over Sunshine Eagles in the clash of the west at Greenwich Reserve and put the disappointment of a 6-4 loss to Bonbeach Bluejays seven days earlier behind them.

Wolves coach Peter Collins found one significant improvement made all the difference.

"It was almost identical to last week," he said. "But this week we didn't make three errors. We were a lot more solid in defence."

Jay Willis was a major reason for the Wolves' defensive improvements. The veteran was moved from his usual position at first and thrived in a more active role.

"He's a really cool head to have at shortstop," Collins said. "He's been in the game for a long time. He made a lot of Victorian junior teams when he was younger and was with the Melbourne Monarchs in the ABL."

Jason Lester brought his Agame to the mound once more. In six innings, he reached the 90-pitch mark for two runs.

Aaron Green kept the clamps on a hot Eagles batting line-up in the last three innings.

"It was good to keep them down to two runs," Collins said. "They [Sunshine] have certainly been scoring more than two runs lately."

The Eagles have a potent one-two pitching combination in Rory Meddick and Adam Irons.

But the Wolves made them look second-rate from the moment Green unleashed a lead-off triple in the first inning.

It was a precursor to how the match would pan out with the Wolves scoring four runs, 11 hits and stranding a heap of players on base.

"We should've won by a lot more," Collins lamented. "We left 11 runners on base, but to get four runs off their pitchers is a good effort."

The Wolves have risen to fourth on the ladder ahead of crucial games against St Kilda, away on Saturday, and Springvale in the lead-up to the festive break.

Collins said his team would only get stronger in the second half of the season when a number of key players either return from injury or play a bigger role after being limited by injury.
