BUILD and they will come; come sit, read, chat, drink coffee and play.
There has been a buzz about Yarraville Village in recent days after the west's first pop-up park opened.
Cars were replaced with synthetic grass, temporary trees in large planters and picnic tables and chairs.
The pop-up park, on Ballarat Street between Canterbury and Murray streets, cost Maribyrnong Council about $50,000 for materials and installation.
Ballarat Street will be closed to vehicles for three months while the park is in place. "Anyone can drop by for a coffee, read a book, have lunch with friends or enjoy an ice-cream in the sun before their movie starts," Cr Martin Zakharov said.
"It is essentially Yarraville's first town square - a communal place where the community can meet, gather and enjoy the neighbourhood."
No alcohol can be consumed in the park and the tables and chairs are packed away when nearby shops, restaurants and cafes close.
