STOP the violence against women ... that's the message of an event being held this week at The Substation in Newport.
The Youth Voice Committee of Hobson's Bay has teamed up with ISIS Primary Care, Amnesty International, the White Ribbon Foundation and Vision Australia to celebrate emerging female talent.
With bands in the main room, an art exhibit in the hallways, and short films in adjoining rooms, the celebration, dubbed The Venus Room, is aimed at raising awareness of the Stop Violence Against Women campaign.
Venus Room co-ordinator and youth voice committee member Chelsea Hatherall said the celebration was not meant to exclude males. Rather, it was to empower females and encourage their talent.
"We want to inspire the rise of a culture that supports successful female artists and rejects all concepts of violence against women," Ms Hatherall said. "We even have a group of stylists from the Whitehouse Institute who have volunteered to create a New York glamour-themed 'prep area'. Guests can get facials, makeovers, temporary tattoos and receive campaign material from Amnesty and the White Ribbon Foundation".
Local young people are encouraged to attend the event, which will feature music, visual art and dance performances by female artists from Melbourne's west,
Youth Voice Committee representative Luba Grigorovitch said the Venus Room was a fun way to increase the community's understanding of violence against women.
The Venus Room is open from 7-11am on Friday at The Substation, 1 Mason Street, Newport. Entry is by gold-coin donation.
