West Gate: the nuts and bolts

01 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
A WEST Gate Bridge exhibit, which opened at Scienceworks on Monday, provides a nuts-and-bolts look at one of Melbourne's most iconic structures.

Five hundred workers are working on the state government's bridge-strengthening project, which will result in the bridge being expanded to five lanes in each direction as it connects Melbourne's east and west.

Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas said the exhibit educated children about Australia's most complex construction project.

"More than 350,000 bolts and 1600 tonnes of steel are being added to the bridge and enough carbon-fibre fabric is being used to cover half the MCG," he said.

The project is part of a $1.39billion Monash-CityLink-West Gate (M1) upgrade.
