A FOOTSCRAY-to-Sunshine cycling path is on track to be delivered, with the route being mapped out.
In a bid to improve alternative transport options, Maribyrnong Council produced 'Crossing the Street', a cycling and pedestrian path plan between the two suburbs.
Consultants were engaged late last year to determine the best route for the path, in consultation with VicRoads, VicTrack, Brimbank Council, Bicycle Victoria and local riders.
The council has begun detailed designs of the shared path in West Footscray's Cross and Rupert streets, with construction to begin on this section next financial year.
Maribyrnong Mayor Michael Clarke said it was an exciting joint project with the state Transport Department.
The council also hopes the project will help it achieve its goal of becoming a carbon-neutral community by 2020.
Meanwhile, the western Federation Trail has been earmarked as a priority in the State Government's $115-million Victorian Cycling Strategy.
The extension of the off-road bicycle path will connect Millers Road, Altona, to Williamstown Road in Yarraville. An off-road bicycle path along Hyde and Whitehall streets to Footscray Road in Yarraville has also been announced.
