The pub with no buyer: Belgravia fails to sell

28 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
ICONIC watering hole the Belgravia Hotel on Nicholson Street remains for sale.

An auction on Friday failed to reach the $3.5million reserve and the property was passed in.

Selling agent Daniel De Sanctis of CVA Property Consultants said the highest bid came in at $2million.

The pub was first licensed to George Cooper in 1875 and carried the name of the area bounded by Buckley, Victoria and Charles streets, Belgravia, before it became known as Seddon after early 20th century New Zealand prime minister Richard Seddon. Mr Seddon lived in the area before moving to Bendigo and later to New Zealand. It was at the Belgravia that the Footscray Cricket Club was formed, and according to a historical excerpt on the Western Bulldogs' website, a meeting there in 1886 led to the formation of a senior club.

Mr De Sanctis said the site was suited to residential redevelopment and the hotel would remain on the market.
