Swap till you drop

IN a first for the City of Maribyrnong, a 'Swap-a-rama' will be held to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5.

Residents are being encouraged to bring along good-quality items they no longer need and trade them for items such as sports equipment, books and clothing.

Each item that is in good condition will be exchanged for a token to use as currency to obtain something else at the event.

Maribyrnong Mayor Michael Clarke said it was a chance to offload presents that weren't right or pick up new things without blowing the household budget.

"Swap-a-rama is a fun and guilt-free way to shop. Participants help the environment through recycling unwanted items and acquire new goods without parting with their hard-earned cash."

The swap meet is part of a range of World Environment Day festivities in Maribyrnong. There will also be live music, guest speakers and an award presentation for Challenge to Change - a four-week community education program on reducing carbon emissions.

"Challenge to Change participants proved just how easy it is for all of us to take responsibility for the amount of carbon we produce and do our bit to tackle global warming," Cr Clarke said. "At World Environment Day we'll be celebrating and recognising what these and other community members are doing to help and protect our precious environment."

The Swap-a-rama will be held from 1.30-3.30pm at Phoenix Youth Centre auditorium, 72 Buckley Street, Footscray. Details: 96880357 or 96880584.
