Speeding driver to face court

POLICE have appealed for witnesses after a man was caught speeding in the western suburbs on Monday night.

The incident started about 6.40pm when police noticed a white Holden Commodore driving erratically on Koroit Creek Road, Williamstown North.

Police continued to follow the speeding stationwagon through Altona before it ran a red light at Leakes and Palmers roads, Truganina.

A 29-year-old man was intercepted by police in Sayers Road, Tarneit.

The Wyndham Vale man was charged with numerous traffic offences, including conduct endangering persons.

He was bailed to appear at Werribee Magistrates Court on August 6.

Wyndham North police are seeking witnesses, particularly the driver of a small blue car that was tailgated by the arrested man on Kororoit Creek Road after Millers Road.

■A car driver escaped injury after a collision with a semi-trailer at Altona North yesterday.

The two vehicles bumped bumpers while travelling outbound on the West Gate Freeway over Millers Road shortly after 2pm. Acting Sergeant Adam Johnson of the Hobsons Bay traffic management unit said it was lucky noone was hurt.

■A man was arrested following an aggravated burglary in Altona on Monday. Police were called to the Frazer Avenue residence about 2.10am after the man forced entry to the house and confronted one of the occupants brandishing a weapon.

Investigators were told an alteration took place between the two men before the intruder fled the house.

Police arrested him about 4.30am at a house in Tarneit.

The three occupants of the house, two men believed to be in their 30s and a five-year-old, were not injured during the incident.

■Paramedics placed a critically injured man in an induced coma after he was struck by a car at Altona Meadows on Monday.

Intensive care paramedics from Laverton North, advanced life support paramedics from Werribee and two ambulance managers were called to the incident in Central Avenue just after 5pm.

An off-duty paramedic came across the accident and discovered the pedestrian, about 50, had stopped breathing.

The paramedic performed CPR until the first ambulance arrived.

Intensive care paramedic Kerry Leigh said the pedestrian suffered extensive head injuries, leg fractures and a suspected collapsed lung.

"We put the man into an induced coma to sedate and paralyse him.

"He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition."
