TWELVE first-time school filmmakers will take to the red carpet on Friday for the premiere screening of My Story, My Place - Through the Lens, a series of short documentaries that explore their culture and identity.
Over the past 15 weeks, grades 5 and 6 pupils from The Grange P-12 College in Hoppers Crossing have been guided through every step of the film process by Footscray filmmaker Amie Batalibasi, with support from teacher Lia Pa'apa'a.
The project was undertaken as part of Ms Batalibasi's residency at the school this year under the Artists in Schools program.
"It's been an amazing process," she said.
"They've helped one another with everything from operating the camera to directing and even making their own music.
"When I first started I didn't know what to expect and just hoped if they picked up a couple of techniques that would be great.
"It was a huge ask for them to learn all the facets of filmmaking in a couple of months, but they've really excelled."
Ms Batalibasi said the pupils represented 15 cultures, with this diversity represented in their work.
"Some of the pupils interviewed their parents about their backgrounds.
"One drew 70 pictures for an animation, while others were taught cultural dances and how to cook their traditional foods.
"The footage will be something they'll treasure for the rest of the lives."
The films will be screened at the college's Deloraine campus library, Deloraine Drive, Hoppers Crossing, on Friday from 6pm.
Entry is by gold coin donation.
