SCALING walls and leaping tall buildings is not just for superheroes.
Maribyrnong residents will get a chance to learn parkour, the art of running, jumping, climbing and vaulting over everyday obstacles.
A free six-week course, in Nicholson Street Mall and Maddern Square, Footscray, will teach people how to use their bodies in new ways to move around their local environment.
Australian Parkour Association president Matthew Campbell said the course would cover a range of basic moves and teach participants to trust their own ability to judge distance and direction.
"They [participants] will develop self-confidence and more knowledge about their bodies."
Mr Campbell said people of any fitness level could try parkour.
"Anyone can give it a shot, but you need to be aware of what level you're at."
Parkour's popularity had increased in recent years.
"People really like that it is not competitive and has a social element."
The course is run in partnership with Maribyrnong Council and the State Government.
Sessions begin on June 4 from 5pm to 7pm.
Registration closes a week before the start date.
Call the council on 9688 0200 to sign up.
