Police kick goals to promote harmony

10 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
THE Victoria Police Soccer Club team is hoping to bend it like Beckham against Islamic youth soccer team Al-Huda in a friendly match in Altona this Sunday.

The game has been organised as part of the Attarwon project, which aims to support the development of building good relationships between police

and Muslim communities.

Hobsons Bay youth resource officer Scott Sutton said regular interaction with the Muslim community helped promote mutual respect and understanding.

"It has already been a pleasure working with young leaders [from the Muslim community] in the lead-up to the event and their enthusiasm and hard work has made it all possible.

"We hope the wider community comes out on the day to show their support."

Al-Huda president Saad Hussein is looking forward to the match.

"Appropriately, the game is scheduled on Sunday before Harmony Day, which is a day that celebrates Australia's cultural diversity by promoting participation, respect and a sense of belonging in our community," Hussein said.

The match is at 3pm at Altona East soccer ground, Ross Road, Altona North.
