Pinning up her pin-ups

17 Mar, 2010 08:44 AM
THE female form has long been a subject for artists, but for Chelsea Hatherall it is the personalities behind the appearances that inspire.

The Newport artists explores what it is to be a woman through drawings of pin-up girls and paintings of comic superwomen.

"They are based on trying to find yourself as a woman in contemporary society," she says.

"It really interests me the strength of the female spirit. In the 1960s it changed from the housewife to these politically interested women who have their own right and say."

Hatherall's work is on show at Pludo cafe, 98 Ferguson Street, Williamstown. Another solo exhibition begins on April 30 at Clement Meadmore Room, 220 Ingles Street, Port Melbourne, with 20per cent of the money from the sale of her works to be donated to ovarian cancer charities.

Later this year, Hatherall will travel to London to work on a book to be published when she returns to Australia.
