Our bowlers to the fore

THE Hobsons Bay team proved too strong for a Buloke Shire Council side in a lawn bowls tournament last week.

Hobsons Bay won five games to three, with one ending in a draw.

The teams battled in the inter-municipality tournament at the Altona Bowling Club on Wednesday and Thursday.

The event was aimed at reinforcing a rural-urban friendship alliance.

Representatives from bowling clubs in Hobsons Bay and Buloke (in north-western Victoria) competed for the championship cup as part of Cr Bill Tehan's mayoral program.

The mayor said the tournament encouraged Hobsons Bay and Buloke residents to bond over a mutual interest.

"Lawn bowls is a popular pastime for many and the tournament created a real sense of community spirit and camaraderie between Hobsons Bay and Buloke residents.

"The tournament gives keen bowlers a place to build life-long friendships while pursuing a fun physical activity.

"It was great to have some friendly competition with our friendship alliance counterparts."

Cr Tehan thanked the Bendigo Community Bank's Altona branch for donating $1000 for a dinner for participants. The two councils had established a friendship alliance in May 2006 designed to help bridge the urban-rural divide.

This is the second inter-municipality tournament. Thirty-two bowlers competed at the Buloke township of Donald last year.
