A TOTAL of 47 criminal charges have been laid following a two-day Santiago Taskforce operation in the western suburbs designed to "disrupt organised crime activities".
About 5.5 kilograms of cannabis was seized and 126 penalty notices were issued during the two-day operation on Friday and Saturday.
The operation involved police from the Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Brimbank areas with assistance from the operations response unit, dog squad, traffic drug and alcohol section, and the sheriff's office.
It comes just weeks after the July 1 taskforce raid in Brooklyn on the Chaouk family home that led to a family member being charged.
Detective Sergeant Robert Stanwick, of the Santiago Taskforce, described the latest operation as "partly detection and partly intelligence gathering".
"Police targeted well-known organised crime families and individuals in Altona and Altona North [and other areas in the west] in order to detect and reduce non-fatal shootings that have plagued the suburbs in recent times."
Eleven people from Altona and Altona North were arrested over various alleged criminal offences. These included thefts from motor vehicles, possession of cannabis, trafficking cannabis, burglary offences, and breaching a suspended sentence. One person was charged with possessing a weapon and a Tarneit person was charged with cultivating cannabis.
During the operation, police checked more than 2600 vehicles and searched 1400 people. Twenty-five drivers were detected for blood-alcohol offences. A total of 136 penalty notices were issued for driving offences and 11 indictable offences were detected.
Police clamped nine vehicles.
A Tarneit house fitted out as a hydroponic operation was also raided, resulting in the seizure of 90 cannabis plants and numerous items of growing equipment. The sheriff's office recovered $277,559.60 in fines.
