Newport RSL roof blown off

26 Aug, 2009 09:22 AM
GALE-force winds blew the roof off Newport RSL last Friday as gusty weather conditions wreaked havoc across Hobsons Bay.

Licensee and treasurer Bill Tehan said it was a miracle noone was hurt when the roof was torn from the Market Street building mid-morning.

"The storm's just gone and ripped off the north-facing roof, just clean ripped it off," he said.

"It's half on the footpath and half on the parking area out the back.

"This area is extremely busy with rail commuters making their way past the RSL to the Newport station, so it was a miracle the large roofing structure that ripped away from the building sailing to the street did not injure any passersby."

Noone was in the club at the time.

Powerlines were downed in Blackshaws Road in Altona North.

A fallen tree near Newport station forced the cancellation of train services to and from Footscray, Williamstown and Laverton.

Buses were used to transport passengers.
