Maribyrnong siege: Police surround unit

07 Feb, 2012 08:25 AM
POLICE have sealed off a street in Maribyrnong where two men have barricaded themselves in a unit and are refusing to come out.

The siege began just after 6am when police attempted to arrest two men in Cumberland Drive.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the two men fled inside a unit and refused to come out, prompting police to surround the building.

‘‘A cordon has been set up and specialist units called in to negotiate with the men,’’ she said.

She said traffic diversions were in place. It was unclear why police had attempted to arrest the men initially, the spokeswoman said.

No further details were immediately available, including whether the men were armed.

More to come.
