WHAT DO YOU THINK? SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS STORY TO POST A COMMENT.MARIBYRNONG Council is pushing ahead with a plan to ask the state government to consider shifting council boundaries in the west.
But it could be a tough sell with neighbouring councils.
Cr Dina Lynch earlier this year breathed life into an older idea to expand Maribyrnong's boundaries. Last week councillors voted 6-1 on a motion to meet Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell and ask her to look into conducting a boundary review.
Mayor Sarah Carter voted against the motion.
Cr Lynch earlier this year suggested three changes that could be considered: creating a greater Melbourne council that would take in much of the inner suburbs; expanding Maribyrnong to take in parts of Brimbank and/or Hobsons Bay; or merging Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Brimbank and Hobsons Bay.
"We can't afford to have one super-rich council, Melbourne, and then have all the growth happening in the outer areas. Look at the rate-base in Wyndham and the rate-base in Maribyrnong and you see there's a big disparity.
"Maribyrnong cops the brunt of growth in outer regions without getting compensated for the increasing traffic on our local roads."
More than 140,000 people have made the six western suburbs council areas their new home in the past decade.
A statement from the council last week said "the meeting isn't about achieving a specific boundary outcome, council is simply asking the minister for a meeting to begin discussions on this important issue, which is common to all western suburbs councils".
Hobsons Bay mayor Michael Raffoul said he saw "no need for a boundary review at this stage".
Wyndham Council declined to comment until it had been formally notified of the review.
Maribyrnong Council's debt of close to $33million will be cut to less than $5million at the end of next financial year.
