FOOTBALL identity David Rhys-Jones delivers a rousing speech to the Rotary Club of Footscray before the AFL grand final. Club members arrived at the Croatia Club on Thursday resplendent in the colours of their football teams.
Rhys-Jones' 182-game AFL career with the Sydney Swans and Carlton was characterised by displays of breath-taking brilliance, punctuated by on-field misdemeanours.
He's perhaps best remembered for his outstanding performance in winning the Norm Smith Medal for best-on-ground on grand final day in 1987, which secured Carlton its 15th premiership by 33 points. Rotary Club president Carol Castano said she was delighted to have Rhys-Jones as a guest speaker as his passion, leadership and commitment were also the essential ingredients of a good Rotarian.
