Lexi puts diabetes cause on agenda

24 Jun, 2009 05:00 AM
LEXI White may be only three, but she is already influencing politics.

The tiny ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has made a personal plea to Williamstown state MP Wade Noonan and will raise her cause in Parliament next month as part of the 'Promise to remember me' campaign.

The Newport toddler will join other young ambassadors in urging politicians to remember the 140,000 Australians living with type1 diabetes when making health and policy decisions.

At her tender age, Lexi has already had about 1500 insulin injections.

Mum Louise said Lexi recently came home from kinder and asked why she was different to other children.

"My heart broke," Ms White said.

"She said to me, 'How come I'm the only one with diabetes?'

"She has injections twice a day, morning and night. She does her own 'clickers' [pricking her skin to test blood glucose levels] about eight times a day.

"Lexi deals with this disease really well but it upsets us every day because some of the freedom of childhood has been taken away.

"It's so close to your heart when it's something that affects your life and you would do anything to find a cure."

Lexi will attend a Kids in the House event on July 28 in a bid to raise awareness of juvenile diabetes.

"Lots of people think I got type1 diabetes because I ate too much sugar, but that's not right at all," Lexi says. "We need more research so that kids like me can lead a normal life."

Mr Noonan said he had taken action on the cause as a result of the visit from his young constituent.

"As a result of Lexi's visit to my office, I wrote to our Health Minister, Daniel Andrews, to ask him what the State Government was doing in this area.

"Pleasingly, the minister's response indicated that the State Government is committed to finding a cure for type1 diabetes and its complications through research. The State Government provides research funding to major teaching hospitals and biomedical research institutes through a range of grants. I'm hopeful for Lexi, and other children with type1 diabetes that a cure can be found.

"For the record, Lexi remains the youngest person, at age 3, to seek a formal meeting with me. Good on her!"

Wow what a little star Lexi is, a politician in the making. Let's hope that cure is found very soon.
